A group of business organisations in the West of Ireland has called on the Government to remain committed to the Galway City Outer Bypass, while welcoming the Public Transport Feasibility Study and the GLUAS. Amid fears that next month's budget could cause cutbacks to the National Development Programme, the group has said the bypass is fundamental to the future of Galway City. The group, made up of Galway Chamber, the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland (West Region), IBEC West, Information Technology Association of Galway, and the Irish Hotels Federation's Galway branch, has reiterated its call for the "urgent construction and completion" of the Galway City Outer Bypass, incorporating a new bridge over the Corrib, "as part of any overall and integrated traffic and transportation plan for Galway." The group has said it believes the bypass is "fundamental" to removing transit traffic from Galway City. It also maintains that complementary traffic calming measures, such as park and ride, light rail, bus corridors, cycle lanes etc, will only work in conjunction with transit traffic being removed from the city. The group also said the developments of the N18 and N6, which are both due for completion soon, will disgorge traffic into the city, making the bypass even more important. It also said it believes that the future of both tourism and general industry in the Connemara region are dependent on the bypass. "Traffic continues to top all surveys regarding issues affecting business in Galway. We are committed to an integrated traffic plan for Galway… the GCOB must be part of any such plan. "We, in Galway, look forward to the delivery of a road and rail network that will enhance our work in making this region the best place to work, invest, visit and live," the group said. |
