Brendan Higgins is no ordinary Joe. Determined to succeed in the tough world of auctioneering, he went back to college as a mature student and has steadily worked his way up the career ladder, supported by his wife and two children.

Brendan had "a bit" of a background on property related issues because he worked for six years in a drawing office as a draughtsman technician when he left school. However, in the mid 1980s, like so many others of his generation, he emigrated with his wife first to England and then Australia. After a few years working as a paramedic in Sydney, he brought his family home, and began working with the Western Health Board as an ambulance technician.

In 1999, he did a three-year full time auctioneering course in Galway Mayo Institute of Technology and got a diploma in Property Valuation and Estate Agency. After the three years were up, he went to Oxford Brooks University to continue with their studies for an honours degree.

According to Brendan, this was a tough period in his life because he had to leave his family and commute over and back to England. After returning from England, Brendan started his auctioneering business with just a few rental properties on his books. From there, the business has gone from strength to strength. "It takes times to build up a new business, especially in this game; you have to build up a relationship with your clients," he said.

He is now in his fourth year of business. He moved from Liosban Industrial Estate to an excellent location at the corner of Dyke Road and his star is on the rise. He is a member of the IAVI and can deal with all types of property transactions including residential - houses and apartments, commercial - retail, office, warehousing, industrial, land sales and valuations.

What makes his business stand out from the others is the personal touch Brendan guarantees. "I'm an independent operator now and that's the way I'd like to stay. A lot of people don't always get access to their auctioneer; they don't get to speak directly to them. I think it's important to do so. I will ring clients back and help them in any way I can," he says.

This approach and a professional attitude and service had stood to Brendan and helped him achieve his success to date. He says he likes the interaction with people, has good fun and enjoys working in the property sector. "If you're happy in your job, it makes a lot of difference."

Brendan is determined to succeed and is "looking forward to the coming year and meeting new clients." He is looking for more residential, sites and other properties for his books. If you're thinking of selling this year and require a valuation on your property, Brendan Higgins' office is open from 9.30am until 5.30pm at 8 Headford Road, Woodquay. He can be contacted on 091-563858 or 087-6599779.
