Page 1 of 2 Hotel Meyrick, formerly the Great Southern Hotel, in Eyre Square has been a constant feature of Galway life for the past 160 years. And now, with the addition of a late night lounge and a major ground floor renovation underway, the renamed hotel looks set to become Galway's number one address. "Hotel Meyrick is something special that Galway can offer the tourist market, but it's also something that belongs to the people of Galway. Generations of Galwegians have grown up with this hotel and we want it to be very special for them," says General Manager, Cian O'Broin. "The hotel was re-named 'Hotel Meyrick', as we wanted to maintain its heritage and, given its prominent location on Eyre Square which was once called 'Meyrick Square', the name was perfect," he adds. Hotel Meyrick's particular appeal lies in the number of venues it provides. Throughout the different areas of the new look hotel, the focus is on social interaction. Taking into account that people meet at the hotel for a multitude of reasons, be it a coffee and a chat, lunch or a drink, there are venues and menus to suit everyone's needs. The hotel is currently undergoing an extensive ground floor refurbishment. The British designer of the Year 2007, Taylor Hawes Limited Design, who have been employed to oversee the renovations, have kept the tradition of the building in mind with black and white marble flooring, ornate textured walls, rich golds and crystal chandeliers. The beautiful Victorian style design incorporates a personality that keeps all the old style features intact. "The Parlour will offer tempting gourmet sandwiches and tasty salads throughout lunchtimes as well as traditional afternoon tea. This new style menu will suit local corporate businesses as the gourmet lunch menus are simple, quick and easy," Cian says. The new Oyster Bar and Grill, which will also offer lunch, along with dinner, is making the most of its location and large windows looking out onto Eyre Square. The sumptuous menu features traditional steaks and Ireland's native seafood, including fresh oysters and lobster, which are cooked straight from the oyster tank. |
