The Employment Appeals Tribunal has awarded €15,000 compensation to a binman who was sacked by Galway City Council.

The tribunal found that Galway City Council failed to establish that Joseph Murphy of Baile An Coiste, Headford Road, who was employed as a binman, had been working while absent on a sick cert.

Mr Murphy suffers from planar fascitis which affects his leg. He was awarded the compensation for unfair dismissal. A spokesperson for the City Council said they do not comment on individual cases.
