Galway property developer Gerry Barrett has been granted planning permission to redevelop the historic Hatch Hall building in Dublin.

Hatch Hall was previously a university residence and Mr Barrett has been refused planning permission for a boutique hotel there in the past.

The current permission is for a refurbishment of the building and a change of use to purely residential, involving demolition of a section of the existing building as well as internal alterations.

Mr Barrett purchased the hall in 2004 for €16 million. The building is currently used as a hostel for asylum seekers.

The development will consist of the following, Refurbishment of Hatch Hall, a protected structure, and its change of use from residential/educational use to residential use. This involves demolition of a section of the existing two and three storey buildings at Hatch Place which connects the existing chapel and the four storey section of the existing building along Hatch Lane.

Mr Barrett is the owner of Galway's G Hotel, the D Hotel in Drogheda, Ashford Castle, The Hotel Meyrick and the former Corrib Heights. He also has an extensive range of retail property holdings in Galway through Edward Holdings Ltd, and is planning to develop a boutique hotel in London.
