Avril Horan joins the Galway Independent as Assistant Editor having previously worked as a Senior Journalist with the Athlone Voice newspaper, the Longford Leader, the Star and Galway Bay FM. Avril has served in various roles as business editor, lifestyle editor, news and court reporter during her career. She is a lecturer and examiner in broadcast and print journalism with the Irish Academy of Public Relations.

Originally from Athlone, Avril is a graduate of NUI, Galway with a BA in Political Science, Sociology and English. She received a fellowship from the university to pursue a research MA in Public Policy for which she received a first class honours degree. Avril tutored on the first year core courses in Political Science and Sociology at NUI, Galway. Before breaking into journalism, she spent two years as a Graduate Consultant with Mercer Human Resource Consultants in Dublin.
