BPW Galway was founded in 1986 by Mrs Breda Ryan. It is an organisation for women in business or the professions who meet on a monthly basis in Galway. Events are organised throughout the year by members such as the Schoolgirls Public Speaking Competition, the Business Woman of the Year Competition and the Summer Lunch. BPW Galway is affiliated to BPW National, which in turn is affiliated to BPW International, which has consultative and special relations with several international bodies such as the UN, WHO and FAO. Since its inception BPW Galway has striven to empower women and hold true its' ethos which is to share, educate and have a voice. BPW Galway President Maureen Harewood and club members are particularly grateful to IIB Bank, which is sponsoring this year's event. Through its office based in Dockgate, the bank provides a range of business and personal financial solutions including business banking loans, wealth management advice and home loans. Eamon Bradshaw, Regional Director ssaid, "IIB Bank is delighted to support this event which marks the spirit of innovation and success which makes Galway a unique place to live and work." John Lonergan, a native of Bansha, Co. Tipperary, joined the prison service in1968. He was appointed Governor of Mountjoy Prison in 1984. His philosophy is that change, personal or otherwise cannot be enforced upon people, believing that real and meaningful change comes about through consent and agreement. He is convinced that the task for all of us is, first of all is to find the humanity in another human being and then to nurture it. The more a person becomes aware of their own humanity the more likely they are to treat others with respect. This year's BPW Galway summer lunch is being organised in aid of the charity Voices for Galway. The charity was established by parents to provide speech and language therapy to children and adults with Downs Syndrome in the Galway area. The project currently employs two speech and language therapists and a part time occupational therapist. Currently the charity provides therapy to 70 children and adults in the Galway area. Most if not all of these individuals would have not have access to therapy without this opportunity. Voices for Galway are wholly dependent on fundraising activities and charitable donations from the community to fund the project. This event is always enormously popular among BPW Galway members, their guests and Galway women in general. To book a place, contact Mary Wyer, BPW on 086-8870946 or Carmen Taheny, BPW on 087-2231918. |
