Student accommodation in Galway city is up almost 50 per cent from the summer, according to students from NUI, Galway. Liz Mullery of the Students Union at NUI, Galway, said there was a nationwide accommodation shortage and this was being reflected in the Galway student rental market.

“Accommodation prices in Galway are now almost on par with Dublin. Come September students, especially first year students, become desperate to find a home for the academic year,” she said.

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) President Richard Morrisroe said:

“Thousands of students across Ireland are still struggling to find affordable accommodation as we near the start of autumn term. Last year, many hundreds were forced to commute to college for two or three hours daily because the housing closer to colleges is expensive,” he said.
