The Director of IBEC's West Regional Office, John Brennan, has warned
that the National Development Plan will be ultimately judged on its
ability to deliver tangible benefits to the west region.
Mr Brennan welcomed the priority given to balanced regional development in the Plan. Prior to its launch, IBEC had consistently argued that balanced regional development was the main criteria on which the Plan should be assessed. IBEC particularly welcomed the decision to supplement mainstream investment by the Gateways Innovation Fund, a new €300 million pilot initiative, which is designed to promote public and private co-funded competitive bids from the Gateways and regions for developing local economic infrastructure. The €184 billion plan is designed to give practical implementation to the 2002 National Spatial Strategy. Acknowledging the regions' pivotal economic role, it sets out an investment strategy for the NSS Gateways and hubs including Galway, Castlebar/Ballina and Tuam. The Plan sets out investment of €33 billion in roads, rail and airports which will be used to address deficits in transport infrastructure and help to promote regional competitiveness. It will also facilitate appropriate land use and spatial planning. Major investment is planned in housing, environmental services, urban renewal and regional enterprise development. |
