The Galway Traffic and Transportation Forum has begun its swing into action, following the group's inaugural meeting last month. ![]() According to Dr Chris Coughlan of the Galway Chamber, the meeting was well attended, with all invitees attending and presenting on a range of topics. "The meeting went on from 5.30 to 9pm and nobody left – that shows the interest. People took it very seriously, they had their presentations prepared, and we heard a range of presentations from the cyclists, An Taisce, GLUAS, the Gardaí, the City Council, and the Harbour Board," he said. "There was a fantastic amount of goodwill, with people wanting to move forward. Everyone involved in traffic and transportation in the city was there, voluntary and civic groups, in order to get a common understanding." As a follow-up to the meeting, Dr Coughlan said the forum had agreed to put together a list of 'quick wins'; objectives that could be implemented fast without a delay. "We are asking groups about changes in smaller areas that they would like to see," he explained. "For example, the cyclists want ten parking spaces in the city taken out and cycle places put there instead. That's achievable." In the long-term, the forum will state its vision for the city's traffic and transportation for 2030. The forum also has an Education sub-group, chaired by IFN Group Managing Director Declan Dooley. The group is charged with investigating the needs of educational institutions including NUI, Galway, GMIT, and both primary and secondary schools. A survey on these is currently being carried out with the aim of reducing the number of cars coming into the city at busy times. The presentations heard at the meeting will be available soon on www.galwaychamber.com. |
