Minister Eamon O Cuív was in Delphi last Friday, 11 April, to announce one of the biggest new developments and jobs announcement for Connemara in recent times.

Delphi Mountain Resort has had a €10 million makeover, following a two-year investment programme initiated by the new owners and managers, headed by Rory Concannon and his wife Aileen.

The developments will lead to 60 new jobs for the area, a substantial boost for a rural area.

In his speech, Minister O Cuív welcomed the creation of the new jobs, saying he believed it was a start of greater things to come.

"I am a firm believer in the importance of rural recreation to the rural economy. The most recent figures published by Fáilte Ireland show a significant rise in the number of visitors coming to Ireland to enjoy our countryside; increasing numbers of tourists come here specifically to enjoy walking, hiking, angling and other outdoor pursuits. The only limit to developments is our own imagination and willingness to invest in creating world-class facilities. Delphi Mountain Resort is a wonderful example of what can be done, and it is my hope that what the Concannons have achieved here will inspire others to make similar investments."

When the fresh new team took over in 2006, they immediately began a multi-million euro development to upgrade the spa and guest facilities, adding additional luxury accommodation options to the resort.

A major part of the new €10 million development, and something very close to the owners' hearts, has been the implementation of a thorough environmental management programme, developed in consultation with Mayo County Council and the local community, one of the most significant elements of which was the installation of a water treatment facility which treats and purifies all of the water used in Delphi, returning it to the equivalent standard as drinking water, thus guaranteeing zero environmental impact from the resort on the surrounding groundwater.

Owners Rory and Aileen Concannon have said they are proud to be flying the flag for the finest in Irish environmentally aware tourism.

The new jobs created at Delphi Mountain Resort have been in the areas of adventure, catering and hospitality, as well as some key management positions, many of which have recently been filled.

"We are proud and delighted to be involved in this special project, which supports the local area and promotes environmentally aware and sustainable tourism," said Rory Concannon, owner and manager of the resort. "We offer a truly unique hospitality experience and everyone at Delphi Mountain Resort genuinely embraces the philosophy of Céad Míle Fáilte."

The Minister for Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív T.D., will officiate at the event to mark this important new phase in the development of the resort, speaking to assembled guests at 3 p.m. approx., formally launching the celebrations to mark the new development, and offering his congratulations on the creation of 60 jobs in total in this rural community to date.
