It’s an unlikely journey to go from a bin man to business author but following dreams is something Oisin Browne strongly advocates in business and his story has made him a bestseller.
Mr Browne is the first to admit that the journey hasn’t been easy and says, “If I had to go back on the back of a bin truck in the morning, I’d do it. I’d have no problem.” In fact, that is where you learn the most, he says. “That’s where you see where things work and where they don’t. You learn more on the ground than anywhere else.”
His newest book, The Binman’s Guide to Marketing, was only released two weeks ago but has already reached best seller status in three Amazon.co.uk categories, taking the number one spot in the Business, Finance and Law Multi Level category.
This is the second time he has celebrated an Amazon Best Seller success. His first book, The Binman’s Guide to Selling, shot to number three in the Sales and Marketing category on Amazon. He is already writing his third book, The Binman’s Guide to Customer Service, which it’s hoped will be launched at the end of this year.
In business and in his writing, Mr Browne sets goals. He describes himself as lucky to be able to combine his two passions, and for the end result to help people.
“I am very lucky that I get to be creative. It is one of my passions. I write, paint and play music. But my main passion is writing and before I wrote the books, I wrote a weekly column for three years in the business section of a local newspaper. I loved writing about business and keeping it upbeat and positive.
“If I gave someone an idea to go and do something, it’s so worth it. I put my two hobbies together, writing and business, and the idea to write a series of books on business topics that people can dip in and out of emerged. They are written in a no-nonsense style but there is also some academic content.”
He explains, “The way I put the book together is I get 100 ideas or points and then there are 50 interviews from real life companies that readers can tap into. I get the interviews first and these can greatly influence the content of the book. The books are very easy to tap in and out of. It will either connect with you or it won’t. My main focus is to inspire and motivate business people, management teams, start ups and anybody starting out or with an interest in business.”
The new book features a collection of marketing inspirations and ideas which have been the secrets to his success. There are chapters on branding, social media, PR, digital marketing and traditional media.
He learned a considerable amount on his journey from bin man to now being part of the core team at The City Bin Co, he explains, “My transition from bin man went from many years on the back of the truck to the office where I worked in sales, then the customer service centre and marketing. I had a really good view of every department of the company. When you are this long in a company, 18 years, it’s about the learning and hands-on being out there and doing it.”
The City Bin Co. won the Deloitte ‘Best Managed Companies Award’ four times in a row and Mr Browne says that the company prides itself on its strong customer service ethos and “spreading the word of customer service,” something he is adamant is vital for success.
As a result, Mr Browne is perfectly placed to offer tips to those who are starting out. His firm belief is if “things are not working, then you must find out why. Find out why customers are not engaging. If you don’t change something, nothing will change”.
Another tip is to ask those who have done what you want to do for advice. “You’ll find that they will be more than willing to help you out. Don’t be afraid to send that email or make that call,” he adds.
‘The Binman’s Guide to Marketing’ is available online from Amazon and Charlie Byrne’s Bookshop, Galway.
