Every year I discuss apprenticeships with my clients and nine times out of ten my clients aren’t interested in exploring same because up until last Thursday they were quite limited in variety.
However this all changed last Thursday when the Minister for Education and Skills and the Minister for Skills announced a major expansion of the apprenticeship scheme offered in Ireland. The expansion saw twenty five new apprenticeships introduced in areas such as; financial services, engineering, the travel industry and cheffing.
Currently there are twenty seven categories of apprenticeships available in Ireland which fall under five distinct sectors; construction, engineering, printing and motor mechanics.
This will now be expanded and the following apprentices will be offered;
Training will range from two to four years and will see apprentices obtaining qualifications ranging from Level 5 (certificates) to Level 9 (Masters degree). It is thought that up to 2,500 places will be available each year. It is expected that these new apprenticeships will be rolled out within the next twelve months.
