There are places beyond the city limits, in the more remote parts of the country where a creature known as ‘the single mom’ resides. There, in her natural habitat, she must battle against a daily onslaught of putrid nappy changes, midnight bottle feeds, incessant cleaning, school runs, and extra-curricular activities.
As the day is winding down and all is done, when little people are sleeping sweetly and thoughts of sugar plum fairies dance round their innocent heads, the only thing that mamma needs is a tall glass of vino, sweet silence and a warm bed…alone. My friend Lisa is one such mamma.
However, despite being run up the walls with an endless catalogue of chores, Lisa has somehow discovered a space in her demanding schedule to maintain a pretty active dating life, all thanks to the magic and wonder of online dating.
Lisa took the death defying nose-dive into the ravine of web flirting five years ago, not long after she was blessed with a beautiful bouncing baba but since then has been met with a line-up of losers!
One of her more recent suitors was a man named Thomas. Sadly, Thomas’ wife abandoned him and his two daughters on – wait for it – Christmas Eve and departed to greener pastures in the UK. All the lonely old soul wanted after the abandonment was a dependable gal with strong values, who he could rely on.
The early days of their courting consisted of Facebook chat, texts and calls and, on the rare occasions when both could find a sitter, the pair shared laughs over drinks, stories over dinners and moments of uninhibited, intimate connection. That was until Thomas’ distraught wife landed on Lisa’s door one stormy night looking for her wayward husband. Yes, Thomas was a big, fat, phoney.
Before Thomas, Lisa encountered an inventory of idiots like the not-so-secret cross-dresser, not to mention the not-so-secret ex-convict.
When a single mother is looking for company she needs to be cautious about what man she brings into her home, because if it goes well, this man may one day come to be that kid’s father (figure). And some of them, who want to tackle parenting on their tod don’t really want a daddy, they just want some fun with a hot, sound guy.
So guys, don’t be afraid of the single mom!
