The NUI Galway Literary & Debating Society will host a celebration of Senator David Norris’s work at 7pm tomorrow, Thursday 27 February, in the Kirwan Lecture Theatre on the main Arts Concourse of NUI Galway.
According to organisers, “Senator David Norris has done more for gay rights in Ireland than any other single person. He is responsible for the de-criminalising of homosexuality in this country, and was the first openly gay politician to ever be elected to public office”.
“The Literary and Debating Society would like to commend Senator Norris for his exceptional contribution to human rights in Ireland by holding an event in his honour, and presenting him with our President’s Medal.”
At the event the society will hold re-enactments of some of the most memorable speeches from his historic court case, and will have guests discuss the case itself. There will also be an information talk at the beginning of main motion. The talk will be held by Eoin Daly, a lecturer on constitutional law in NUI Galway.
All are welcome to attend. For more information visit literaryanddebating.com.
