Ten rapes and 20 sexual assaults were reported to Gardai in Galway in the first eight months of this year. The numbers of rapes for this period is down 16% on last year.
The numbers of sexual assaults showed no change on last year. Some of these alleged attacks involved minors.
Gardai stated they were following lines of enquiry and that the majority of the alleged perpetrators involved were known to the victims.
These statistics were released as part of a Garda Report issued at this week’s Galway City Joint Policing Committee.
